I’ve seen the way people’s eyes light up when they hear “Taj Mahal quartzite”—and just as often, I’ve seen them cloud with skepticism. It’s one of those materials that’s become so popular, some folks have turned against it just because. Yet, when it came to designing the kitchen at the Grandiose Lakehouse, I didn’t hesitate. Four years on, I’m happy to say I’d choose it again in a heartbeat.

Here’s the truth of it: two things often get blended when people talk about popular materials. There’s whether a material is good—how it looks, how it wears, what it does with light, and how it fits in with everything else. Then there’s how widespread its use is. Only one of those should concern you when thinking about your own home. Taj Mahal became popular for a reason. It offers that beautiful blend of warm browns and creams, which anchors a palette and gives everything else around it a cohesive flow.

In the Grandiose Lakehouse, the choice of this stone set the tone for the entire kitchen. We built outward from that slab, and the result feels timeless—something that still feels like “right” comfort four years later. Opting for a popular stone doesn’t mean you’re just jumping on a bandwagon. If anything, it’s a testament to that material’s enduring appeal.
