Why Lighting Choices Are Essential to Finish Selection

It’s a fascinating thing to consider: about half the time anyone is home, the only light in the room is light that somebody chose. That’s a realization that can shift your perception. Often, people select finishes bathed in natural daylight, either in a showroom or by a window. But the truth is, most people live with those finishes in the evening, under the light of fixtures—each casting its own influence. Both interactions are real, but how often do we test them both before making a decision?
This is why, in my role, choosing lighting is just as integral as selecting tiles, countertops, or cabinetry. It’s not a separate decision. Lighting transforms how materials read in a space, causing a dramatic change between daylight and evening. Think about it—how a countertop shimmers underneath a pendant light can completely shift to a flat look under only recessed lights, known as cans. A backsplash may reveal hidden textures under soft under-counter lighting, but appear plain and flat when viewed under harsh overheads. And don’t get me started on cabinetry. Under warm light, your favorite cabinet color might shift in tone to something unexpected.
This is why one of my crucial steps is walking a finished house with the electrician. We check and confirm every fixture’s position and height, ensuring they are exactly as intended, because even the smallest deviation can change how a light interacts with its environment. It’s not just about aesthetics; it’s about experiencing the space as intended, especially during those cozy evening hours.
So here’s something to consider: how do you use your rooms after dark? Evening use should shape your lighting choice, and in turn, influence the finishes beneath it. Understanding this interplay helps create a space that feels cohesive, warm, and inviting at all times, not just in daylight.
