Why Revisiting Selections Often Leads to Better Choices

Building a custom home is a journey full of choices, some made quite early on. With selections happening at the start and construction taking months, it’s not unusual for something chosen in those initial meetings to become unavailable or jump in price when it’s time to install. That’s when we find ourselves back at the drawing board, re-evaluating decisions.

Here’s something I’ve learned that often surprises my clients: by the time we revisit a selection, many have evolved in their thinking. It’s not that they’ve been inconsistent. Back when we kicked off the process, they were making decisions based on a set of plans and a vision, not a physical place. Now that they’ve walked through the framing, seen firsthand the light flooding through their own windows, and witnessed the materials melding into a cohesive palette, they simply know more.

I’ve noticed that these unplanned meetings, initially prompted by a supply issue, often lead to better choices than the originals, because they are being made by someone who now understands their own house. Clients have a sharper vision or have grown comfortable leaning a bit further into a direction they only cautiously stepped into before.

Of course, there’s an anxious side to this too. Sometimes, a single change can make someone feel like everything is unraveling. But honestly, it rarely is. Usually, there’s another material that fits beautifully, a paint color adjustment that brings it all together, and the rest of the design holds true. My job is to reassure that not everything will fall apart and to guide them toward keeping the integrity of their original vision.

No one would willingly choose for these moments to occur. Yet, it’s worth knowing that when they do, it’s not a complete setback—it’s more like a second glance. Ultimately, these second looks often lead to choices that reflect where you are now, not just where you imagined you’d be.
