Choosing Materials for a Lake Home Built for Gathering
Scroll
A great many of the homes I’ve worked with near Lake Texoma are designed with gathering in mind—spaces where people can come together, enjoy each other’s company, and make memories. These homes often have a distinct layout: a large kitchen island that serves as the heart of the home, an outdoor kitchen for those lovely sunny days, and open spaces that allow for seamless flow from one room to the next. Designing a home like this does more to change your material choices than you might expect.
Let’s talk about how. When a home is built to host, the materials need to handle real use, day in and day out. Take countertops, for example. In a home where the kitchen is the gathering hub, the countertops are a durability decision as much as an aesthetic one. They need to stand up to daily wear and still look beautiful. Flooring is another area where this matters. It often flows continuously through spaces that see a lot of foot traffic and those that are more laid-back, so it has to look right and perform well across all areas.
The kitchen island is typically the centerpiece—everyone seems to naturally gravitate toward it. Because it’s visible from every room in an open-plan setup, it deserves a truly remarkable slab. This is where you can really make a statement.
And because these spaces are visually connected, your palette needs to be cohesive across all rooms. You want nothing jarring, since a room that feels a bit off when seen from three doorways at once can throw the whole space out of balance. What you’re aiming for is a home that’s comfortable to live in, not just showy in photos.
The standard I hold is that these homes aren’t just about looking good; they’re about feeling good to use. You shouldn’t be anxious about surfaces any more than you’d be about a piece of furniture you use every day. You want a home that’s genuinely enjoyable.

Working through selections?
If you’re building with Ceci Bates, this is the part I take off your plate — the stone, the tile, the stain, the paint, and all the small decisions that have to agree with each other. Tell me what you’re working on and where you’ve got stuck. No pressure, just a conversation.
