Why Mood Boards Come First in Designing Your Home

Before anyone picks a tile or a countertop in a Ceci Bates custom home, the first step is to build a mood board. I always start here because it sets the direction for colors, materials, textures, and above all, the feeling of how you want your home to be. This process might seem abstract, but establishing a direction before actual materials are chosen is crucial.

Feeling comes first in design because it guides the entire process. When you start with specific products, you risk ending up with a hodgepodge—a collection of lovely things that don’t quite fit together as a whole. That’s why the first meeting is really a conversation. I like to ask questions about how you envision living in the home. Is it going to be a place for gathering friends, or do you imagine quiet evenings? How do you want to move through the space? Which rooms will become the heart of your daily life? These inquiries are my way of deep diving into the essence of your lifestyle, because everyone’s different, and every personality calls for a unique touch.

Once the direction is approved, it serves as a reference point for every decision that follows. This clarity makes the selection process not only easier but faster. Each choice, from the biggest elements to the smallest details, now answers the same guiding question: does it fit the vision? This is also the part where I morph into someone else’s style. It’s a lot of fun and one of my favorite parts of the job, even if their taste is nothing like mine.

So what should you bring to our mood board meeting? There’s no need for a detailed plan. Just bring a sense of how you want the space to feel. We’ll explore that influence together, shaping it into a visual language that expresses your home’s character.

If you’re starting to think about designing your own home, I’d love to hear what you have in mind. Let’s talk about your vision and how we can bring it to life. Feel free to visit heather.living to begin the conversation.
